AMEA Power is investing an additional $800 million in two new groundbreaking renewable energy projects in Egypt. This strengthens AMEA Power’s position as a major player in Egypt’s clean energy sector, bringing its total PV and wind project capacity in the country to 2,000MW, with 900MWh of battery energy storage systems (BESS).

AMEA Power, one of the fastest growing renewable energy companies, has signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) to develop Africa’s largest solar PV and Egypt’s first utility-scale battery energy storage system. AMEA Power has secured two new landmark renewable energy projects in Egypt following the successful development of the 500MW Abydos solar PV project. The first project is a new 1,000MW solar PV power plant in the Benban area of Aswan Governorate, equipped with a 600MWh BESS, which will mark a historic milestone in Africa’s largest solar PV and BESS project; the second project is a 300MWh BESS, which is an expansion of the company’s 500MW Abydos solar PV power plant currently under construction in Kom Ombo, Aswan Governorate, and will be the first to use utility-scale BESS solutions in Egypt.

On September 12, AMEA Power signed power purchase agreements with the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company for the two projects. The projects are expected to create approximately 2,500 jobs during the peak construction period, provide clean renewable energy to more than 769,800 households, and offset more than 2,347,000 tons of carbon emissions each year.

Hussain Al Nowais, Chairman of AMEA Power, said: “As the developer of the largest PV project in Africa and the first BESS in Egypt, the project not only sets a new benchmark for the renewable energy industry in Egypt and the African continent, but also demonstrates our leadership and innovation in pushing the boundaries of possibility. We are honored to play such a key role in shaping the future of clean energy in Egypt and the continent. These projects are not only about power generation, but also a catalyst for economic growth, job creation and community empowerment.”

AMEA Power’s projects in Egypt include: the 500MW+300MWh Abydos solar PV project, which will be commissioned in October 2024.

The 500MW Amunet wind power project, which is under construction and will be commissioned in the third quarter of 2025; another 1000MW solar PV project equipped with a 600MW BESS.

The significant investment in renewable energy will not only improve Egypt’s energy security and diversification, but also contribute to the country’s ambitious clean energy goals. Given Egypt’s recent long-term power outages, the two projects, once commissioned, will help support the country.

AMEA Power will continue to work closely with local communities as part of its commitment to socio-economic development and will undertake key social initiatives under its Community Investment and Development Programme.
